Meet Helen

It started on a visit to a shepherd.

While the humans talked, the dogs did what dogs do best: they found the good spot. A pile of freshly shorn wool, set aside to be discarded. They didn’t deliberate. They climbed in, curled up and switched off.

Nobody had taught them to do that. They simply chose the wool.

I kept thinking about that pile. The shepherd had paid to have the sheep shorn, The shepherd had paid to have the sheep shorn. And then? No one wanted the wool — not even for free. At the same time, there were plenty of dog beds being made from synthetic materials. I wanted to know why we were overlooking the wool right in front of us.

So I started asking questions, learning about the material and working out what I could make with it. The dogs had found their place in a matter of seconds. I took a little longer — but I couldn’t leave the idea alone.

HELEN WELLS began there: with a shepherd, a pile of wool and several dogs who knew exactly where they wanted to be. Today, we make places for dogs to curl up in materials chosen with care. Preferably without having to ask them twice.

Before it became a bed, wool was already a place to rest.

That's where the Sheep Donut came from — proof that dogs know good material when they feel it. The same instinct carried into everything else we make: natural fibres instead of anything that cracks, pills or fades after one season.
